Frequently Asked Questions

Why do block parties matter?

Block parties are amazing things; they make better use of the space we already occupy, they are excuses to celebrate with one another and they have the ability to turn strangers into neighbors. Block parties matter because they are one of the easiest, effective and most affordable ways to build stronger neighborhoods and communities.

What's Included in this kit?

Block Party in a Box includes a manual that provides an overview of things to consider when planning a block party in a step-by-step format and a dozen printable resources to help plan and execute a successful block party. This kit also includes thousands of hours of time, multiple kilojoules of energy, a deep amount of thought and sweat-filled effort put in by everyone who contributed to its creation.

Who is this kit for?

This kit is for anyone who wants to improve the places they live. This kit is for people who like to party. This kit is for families, single parents, seniors, friends and neighbors who want to have a block party but don't know where to begin. This kit is for people like you; people who want to build better places to live, stronger neighborhoods and a better tomorrow.

Do I need this to plan a block party?

Chances are that you've come across this kit after searching for available resources to plan a block party with; you're already looking for help. While this kit isn't necessary to plan and execute a successful block party it takes care of a lot of the mundane work involved in planning such an event, allowing you to focus more on simply having a good time with your neighbors.

Why did you create this?

I created this because I wanted to be able to help every street plan their own party. I created this because we're always looking for ways to make better use of the space we already occupy. I created this because, while I don't ever think you need permission to celebrate with your neighbors, I thought that some people might need an excuse to do so. Most of all, I created this as a way to help people from across the globe turn their strangers into neighbors.

Will this cost money?

I believe that not everything that is social should be free. If something provides value it should be exchanged for something of equal value; this includes money. I want to continue to be able to create things and develop projects that explore the places we call home and charging a nominal amount for Block Party in a Box is one small way to bankroll future projects. It will only cost a few dollars and I think it will be more than worth it.

Is there a physical version of this kit?

Yes and no. There are currently a limited number of 'prototype' physical versions of this kit floating around but there is nothing in production and available for purchase online at this time. If you're interested in staying up to date on this project, including being notified if a physical version comes available, please sign up for our no-spam EVER, mailing list here.

This is about more than just block parties. This is about strangers becoming neighbors, building stronger neighborhoods and fostering a sense of community.

What the Experts are Saying

I think that what we actually need, of course, is a little more dirt on the seat of our pants as we sit on the front stoop and talk to our neighbors once again, enjoying the type of summer day where the smell of garlic travels slightly faster than the speed of sound.

Harvey Milk

When strangers start acting like neighbors... communities are reinvigorated.

Ralph Nader

Unique well-designed third places alone will not necessarily bring people together; planned activities hold the greatest potential to add life to community gathering places.

D. Andrew Bernhardt

In the block parties the young and the old ... are getting together to ... unite with their neighbors in a general feeling of unity and patriotism.

The Outlook, October 1918

About this Kit

We all reside on some type of street and whether we live in an apartment, a detached house or town home we all have amazing people we call our neighbors. But when was the last time we got together with them simply to party?

The process of trying to plan a block party can be an onerous one. There are lots of things to take care of, and when time & energy aren’t in abundance there often isn’t an opportunity to plan a party when one might be needed most.

I wanted to be able to help every street plan their own party. I knew there had to be a better & easier way.
